Detailed History of Rail Nagar St. Anthony’s Church

1. Formation of Rail Nagar (1967 – 1980s)

In 1967, ‘Rail Nagar’ was created across 63 acres of land by Mr. Thangavel Achari, the Station Master of Kattangulathur Railway Station. This was planned even before the formation of Maraimalai Nagar in 1974. Settlement of people increased significantly after the 1980s.

2. Land and Church Construction (1989 – 1994)

In 1989, 4½ grounds of land were purchased for the church. Archbishop Casmir and Rev. Fr. Lawrence assisted in this effort. In 1992, construction work began through the efforts of Rev. Fr. Matthew, and in 1994, the church was inaugurated by the Archbishop of Madras-Mylapore.

3. Former Parish Priests and Growth of Anbiyams

Various development works were carried out during the tenure of each parish priest along the church’s growth path:

Rev. Fr. Christu Raj, Rev. Fr. Paulraj, Rev. Fr. Marianayagam:
During their tenure, the St. Anthony’s Anbiyam was active. Rev. Fr. Marianayagam played a key role in the early development and maintenance works of the church.

Rev. Fr. Paul John:
During his time, St. Anthony’s Anbiyam continued its spiritual work. Through his efforts, the church was renovated and expanded. A new Flagpole (Kodimaram), compound wall, iron fencing, and entrance gate were established. He also grandly celebrated the Silver Jubilee of the church.

Furthermore, during his period, Tuesday Masses were regularized, with Holy Mass and Eucharistic Blessing held every Tuesday. The first Tuesday chariot procession and Annadhanam (charity meals) were also started.

4. Current Parish Priest: Rev. Fr. Alex Manohar

Rev. Fr. Alex Manohar assumed responsibility as the current Parish Priest and has been conducting church events excellently. During his time, the Anbiyams have been expanded into three:

  1. Child Theresa Anbiyam
  2. Devasahayam Anbiyam
  3. Fatima Anbiyam

Technologically, he has introduced facilities like LED screens so that the congregation can clearly view events like the Stations of the Cross, conducting all services with great precision.
