History of Our Lourdhu Annai Church
The history of Our Lourdhu Annai Church stands as a beautiful witness to the growth of faith, unity, and community spirit, evolving from a handful of families into a vibrant and well-organized Christian community.
1. Early Beginnings (1976–1978)
The origins of the church date back to 1976, when Holy Mass was celebrated in the homes of the faithful. At that time, the Christian community consisted of only 4 to 5 families, united under a single Anbiyam known as Lourdhu Annai Anbiyam.
These early gatherings were organized by Rev. Fr. Britto, Parish Priest of Melrosapuram, whose dedication laid the spiritual foundation for the growth of the church. In 1978, land was acquired and a small hut was constructed, marking the establishment of the church as a substation of Melrosapuram Parish.
2. Development and Expansion (1984)
In 1984, the church was expanded by replacing the hut with a sheet-roofed building. This work was carried out under Rev. Fr. George Palakattukunnal, Parish Priest of Melrosapuram. During this period, Holy Mass was celebrated every Saturday at the substation.
3. Transition to Maraimalai Nagar Parish
With the establishment of Vinnarasi Church in Maraimalai Nagar, Our Lourdhu Annai Church came under the jurisdiction of Maraimalai Nagar Parish, entering a new phase of pastoral care and administration.
4. Construction of the New Church (2013–2014)
A major milestone was achieved in 2013, when the foundation stone for the new church building was laid by Rev. Fr. Paul Raj, Parish Priest of Maraimalai Nagar. The construction was completed and the church was solemnly blessed on 31st May 2014 by Rt. Rev. Dr. A. Neethinathan, Bishop of Chingleput. From then on, Holy Mass began to be celebrated regularly every Sunday.
5. Recent Developments (2019–2023)
- 2019: A grand entrance arch was constructed under the guidance of Rev. Fr. Mariya Nayagam. It was blessed on 10th February 2019 by Rev. Fr. G. Bakiya Regis.
- Liturgical Growth: Under the initiative of Rev. Fr. Paul John, special midnight Masses for Christmas, New Year, and Easter were started. He also constructed the church Sacristy.
- February 2023: A flagpole (Kodimaram) was erected and blessed by Rev. Fr. P. Johnson Vijay, a son of the soil.
6. Feast Celebration
The feast of Lourdhu Matha (Our Lady of Lourdes) is celebrated every year with great devotion during the second week of February. This annual feast brings together parishioners and devotees, strengthening faith and fostering unity.
7. Growth of the Community
From a humble beginning of just a few families, the church has grown to more than 80 families. When Rev. Fr. Alexis Manohar was taking care of the church, he started the Legion of Mary (Mariyayin Senai) in October 2025. The Anbiyams were reorganized into three groups:
- Saleth Madha Anbiyam
- Thiru Irudhaiya Aandavar Anbiyam
- Panimaya Matha Anbiyam
Current active groups include a Youth Wing (12-15 members), Mariyayin Senai (12 members), and a dedicated Choir Team. Catechism classes are conducted every Sunday after Holy Mass.
Conclusion
The journey of Our Lourdhu Annai Church reflects deep faith and commitment. Today, the church stands as a beacon of faith, hope, and unity, continuing to guide and inspire the community for generations to come.
